Learn to Sail

Florida Yacht Group is a member of The American Sailing Association and offers courses designed to teach the sailing skills you need, whether your just learning how to sail for the first time or are an accomplished sailor and want to become bareboat certified.

Our sailing schools are located in West Palm Beach, Miami, Key West and St. Petersburg, Florida.  We have a variety of classes based on ASA training courses and can customize your needs so that you can learn how to apply your newly developed skills while on a sailing vacation!

Our classes starting from “sailing for beginners” may be expanded into a full-blown bareboat sailing school experience.  This is a very popular option because it allows you to become bareboat certified and begin sailing charter boats almost anywhere in the world.  These courses are three levels of certification conducted in one week and allows you the opportunity to save on hotel fees because it is a live aboard sailing school.

Our fleet of power and sailing vessels consists of ASA certified day sailors, newer mono-hulls ranging from 35 to 50 plus feet and of course modern and contemporary catamarans in the 40 plus foot range.

Our instructors are quite simply the best in the business. Each has extensive experience in the industry and most importantly love teaching people how to sail.  They are certified to teach ASA 101 through ASA 106, including ASA 114. They are USCG licensed captains with numerous “ASA instructor of the year” award winners. Here are a few of our client’s reviews. “

"Great locations, great boats, and knowledgeable, caring instructors.  This is what makes our sailing school make sense for you!"

Courses Offered

Basic Keelboat Sailing:

(ASA 101 - 2 Day Course)

You will learn to sail a boat of about 30 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. This is our most basic course, and no auxiliary power or navigation skills required.

Course description – demonstrated ability to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat of approximately 20 to 30 feet in length by day in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Knowledge of basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards. Auxiliary power operation is not required.

Coastal Cruising:

(ASA 103 - 2 Day Course)

This intermediate level course is designed to increase your cruising confidence. Practice docking, anchoring, points of sail, sail trim, safety tips, basic navigation and use of marine electronics. You will learn to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat of about 30 to 40 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions.

ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Certification is a prerequisite and can be attained prior to this certification.

Bareboat Cruising:

(ASA 104 - 2 Day Course)

This advanced level course will help you achieve the skills necessary to charter yachts on your own. Learn more about on-board systems, such as familiarity with GPS navigation; engine and battery systems; safety, weather and provisioning. This is an advanced cruising class for individuals with cruising experience. You will learn to act as skipper or crew of a 30 – 50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters.

ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Certification & ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising are a prerequisite and can be attained prior to this certification.

Coastal Navigation:

(ASA 105 - 2 Day Course)

This theory course provides you with the know-how to safely navigate in coastal or inland waters. We recommend completing this course prior to, or in conjunction with, the ASA 104 class. Once complete, you should feel comfortable demonstrating navigational theory required to safely pilot a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There is no Sailing Skills part to this curriculum, and practical application of this sailing knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Class (ASA 106).

Advanced Coastal Cruising:

(ASA 106 - Florida 3 Day Course or Bahamas 4 Day Course)

Challenge yourself to achieve competency & skipper a 30-50 foot yacht in daylight and nighttime/any weather conditions. Course curriculum includes a night-time Gulfstream crossing from Miami to Bimini, Bahamas, and you will learn how to navigate at night, clear customs in a foreign port, clean conch and the secret recipe for rum punch – and many more useful tips.

ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising is a prerequisite and can be attained prior to this certification.

Cruising Catamaran:

(ASA 114 - 2 Day Course)

This advanced cruising standard for individuals — with cruising experience – means upon certification you can act as skipper and crew of a 30 – 50 foot multihull sailboat by day in coastal waters. The standard includes instruction in the unique skills required to Captain a 30-50 foot multihull.

ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising is a prerequisite and can be attained prior to this certification.

Student Reviews

    Hi Gary,
Thank you so much for everything this weekend. My wife and I had so much fun and have not stopped talking about it. One of my co-workers is even considering doing it (and we will definitely refer him over to you). We really felt that we had the best instructor. Thank you again for all of your time with us. We enjoyed it so much!
